Permanent diversion

The building of the Kingkerswell bypass, completed in 2015, necessitated a new route for the JMHT through Kerswell Downs. The new route is waymarked with kind permission of Kingskerswell Parish Council.

NB The new route does not appear in our booklet but it is included in the detailed route description (Section 1) above.

At top of Church End Road turn RIGHT into Greenhill Rd then immediate LEFT onto Maddacombe Road bridge, then immediate LEFT into new car park. Follow metal handrail up into Downs and along ridge paths to waymarker C leading down into woodland and gateway D onto Churchway Lane. An information board for Kerswell Downs is now located in the Maddacombe Bridge car park.

For a while now we have been concerned about the volume and speed of traffic along the St Marychurch Road. The JMHT takes in a crossing at the Deer Park Lane section between Coffinswell and Middle Roccombe at SX 892685

Walkers are urged to exercise extreme caution at the crossing on that blind bend. We are currently (Jan 2019) working on a re-route of this part of the Trail which will add a few miles but also enhance the Trail considerably as well as make it safer. The new route neeeds to be approved and will appear neither in the booklets nor on OS maps until a reprinting. Meanwhile please be sure to use an OS map as always and consult this website for any updates.
